Match Intro

From our home base in Europe, GRPL travels to the other side of the world for a special Submission Wrestling series in sunny South Africa. The first matchup brings serious wrestling pedigree onto the mat: 13-time national champion Jaun faces 17-time national champion Luvaan under the unique GRPL Choke-Only rules. This is the first GRPL series we have filmed in South Africa, and Jaun vs Luvaan immediately sets the level high. Both fighters have spent years competing in wrestling, both have crossed over into MMA, and both now have to adapt those skills to a ruleset where takedowns and control alone do not score. Jaun enters with 13 national wrestling titles, two years of grappling and MMA experience, and an amateur MMA background. He weighed 75.3 kg before this match, giving him a clear physical advantage once the exchanges become heavy. Luvaan brings an even longer national wrestling résumé with 17 championship titles. He is also an amateur MMA fighter and normally competes at 61 kg, meaning he enters this matchup with considerably less size but a huge amount of competitive wrestling experience. Together, they bring 30 national wrestling titles onto the GRPL mat. But under GRPL Submission Wrestling rules, none of those titles scores a point. This match is fought over 1 round of 7 minutes. Only chokes are allowed as submissions. Every successful choke scores 1 point, followed by a reset. The fighter with the most points after regulation wins. If the score is tied after 7 minutes, both fighters take a short break before entering Golden Score, where the first successful choke wins the match. That creates a completely different challenge from traditional wrestling. A takedown can create an opportunity, but it does not score. Holding top position can apply pressure, but it does not change the scoreboard. Wrestling dominance only matters if it creates access to the neck. For Jaun, the question is whether his size, wrestling strength and MMA experience can be converted into clean choke attacks. For Luvaan, the challenge is to use his championship-level timing, movement and wrestling experience against a much bigger opponent while competing under GRPL rules for the first time. Two elite South African wrestlers. Thirty national titles between them. One Choke-Only Submission Wrestling ruleset.
